Hospes Puerta de Alcalá

The only place where Madrid changes its pace

Estatua en el frontón de un edificio de piedra, entre hojas verdes

Opposite the imposing Puerta de Alcalá, and with the greenery of Parque del Retiro stretching out like a private garden, stands an elegant 19th-century bourgeois residence. Hospes Puerta de Alcalá is that place where Madrid can be admired without ever stepping away from it. The perfect blend of the classical elegance of the past and the revitalizing energy of the present.

In the heart of Plaza de la Independencia, the vibrant atmosphere of the capital draws you in. Yet, the moment you cross our lobby, once a carriage passage, the rhythm shifts. The bustle remains outside, serenity takes over, and time begins to slow down.

A noble Madrid house reinterpreted as a contemporary home for art, design and the most sophisticated rhythm of the capital.

Facing the Puerta de Alcalá and El Retiro Park, Hospes Puerta de Alcalá resides in an elegant 1883 residence at one of the most emblematic addresses in Madrid. Reinterpreted by Tomás Alía as a sophisticated private home, the hotel combines the architectural elegance of a 19th-century noble house with a fully contemporary vision of luxury. Inside, the experience unfolds through a succession of intimate lounges, spaces dedicated to art, serene corners and a sheltered inner courtyard, evoking those grand Madrid residences conceived for living, hosting, and participating in culture. Fine materials, warm, welcoming lighting, and a carefully curated selection of modern and contemporary art create a deeply residential atmosphere, far removed from the codes of a conventional hotel. More than just a place from which to discover Madrid, Hospes Puerta de Alcalá offers the exceptional privilege of inhabiting it: from its history, its culture, and one of its most distinguished enclaves.

Interior design

Tomás Alía

Tomás Alía and Estudio Caramba have reinterpreted the hotel as a contemporary noble house, inspired by the grand private residences of the upper bourgeoisie in 19th-century Madrid: homes conceived not only to be inhabited, but also to welcome, socialize and live the culture. Instead of a conventional hotel lobby, the main floor unfolds as a succession of connected rooms: an integrated reception, a social lobby, an intimate lounge, in short, a space dedicated to art next to a bright winter garden. The veined stone, the woods, the natural fibers, and the delicate metallic elements construct a rich and restrained material language. The warm and welcoming lighting brings to each space the intimacy and character of a private residence.

Architecture

José María de Aguilar

Designed in 1883 by the architect José María de Aguilar (1827-1899), the elegant red-brick building retains the forged iron balconies, noble proportions and architectural character of a distinguished Madrid residence. Originally conceived as a set of private homes for the city’s bourgeoisie, this historic building has been carefully transformed into a sophisticated urban retreat. The old carriage entrance today becomes an elegant welcome, while the interiors preserve the rhythm and scale of the original building through a contemporary architectural language defined by warmth, depth, and a refined sobriety. Located on the Plaza de la Independencia, with the Puerta de Alcalá at its feet and El Retiro extending before it, the hotel offers the exceptional experience of inhabiting Madrid from one of its most emblematic locations.

Art and Culture

A private collection integrated into the life of the hotel

Art merges with the hotel’s architecture, far from being conceived as a merely decorative element. Works by Manuel Rivera, Antoni Tàpies, Los Carpinteros, Liza Lou, and Lita Cabellut bring life to the reception and lobby, establishing a dialogue between post-war Spanish abstraction and different expressions of international contemporary art. The collection is naturally discovered as the guest moves through the spaces, reinforcing the character of a sophisticated private residence where art is part of everyday life.
